This Week's Talking Points

1) My Q1 writing goals:

Goals

2) My 2019 Marketing Goals:

Marketing goals

3) Books read over Christmas/New Year:

4) Bookbub stats from John Hindmarsh:

Hey Paul,

I’ve just wiped the perspiration from my forehead and put down the nerve tonic. Or was it gin and tonic?

The results of my BookBub promotion – as of this am –

Amazon – 1064

Kobo – 94

Apple – 137

Nook – 80

Total   1,375

Assume total costs just under $2k [small amount of related advertising], and the revenue to me is approaching $2.5k; I’m certainly out of the red.

Results included some good genre placements and reached about #300 in top paid. The really scary part – keep in mind the book is a technothriller, protagonist is genetically engineered, and there is not a starship in sight.

Would I do a BB at the end of December again? Probably not. Too nerve wracking! It was a high-risk promotion, but heh! On reflection I should have more books in the series, to generate sell through. I’ve got the cover for book #5, so I just need to do some more writing.

5) Author earnings from 2018:

$20,300.01 total >>> Wide

$181.16 Payhip

$12,253.25 A/zon

$1,468.85 C/Space

$3852.02 Apple Books

$1350.95 B&N

$814.08 Kobo

$247.61 PublishDrive

$132.09 Google Play

About £16k … The Guardian reported in 2018 that average author income is £12,500 so I’ve exceeded that off my own efforts 🙂

Authors Guild report MUCH lower than that!

https://www.publishersweekly.com/pw/by-topic/industry-news/financial-reporting/article/78944-new-guild-report-finds-more-declines-in-author-earnings.html

The survey further found that the median income for specifically book-related income for published authors declined 21%, to $3,100, in 2017 from $3,900 in 2013 and just over 50% from 2009’s median book earnings of $6,250.

Note, though, I’m not taking it as income!

https://www.theguardian.com/books/2016/oct/19/uk-authors-annual-incomes-below-minimum-wage-survey-average-earnings

I made $76.60 in 2014, $2,242.66 in 2015, $2,612.05 in 2016, $10,621.90 in 2017 and now $20,300.01 in 2018 … the difference is BookBub!
